Senate kicks as Anthony Ojukwu resumes as NHRC boss
The Senate has kicked against the resumption of duties by the executive secretary nominee of the National Human Rights Commission, Anthony Ojukwu, without parliamentary confirmation.
Ojukwu who was appointed in December by President Muhammadu Buhari, was asked this week by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to assume office as the acting Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Senator Dino Melaye who raised the issue said Malami’s decision is in contravention of civil service rules and the Act that established the commission which empowers the Senate to clear the appointee first before his assumption of duties.
The delay in Ojukwu’s confirmation is due to an embargo placed by the upper chamber on all executive nominees due to a logjam created by the standoff between it and Acting EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu who they want removed.
